Latino Childhood Sexual Abuse: A Multicultural Approach to Treatment

Our thanks to Rebecca A. Lund, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, Schools of Graduate & Professional Programs for this paper.

This paper is a summary of the author’s clinical experience relevant to the literature on cultural complexities in belief and value systems in the Latino community regarding CSA. In the literature review, she provides a definition of CSA and discusses the prevalence, symptoms, and risk factors associated with this occurrence in the Latino population. Interventions are presented that contain elements of traditional therapeutic techniques that demonstrate how to use them in a culturally sensitive manner. The benefit of approaching therapy from an ecological perspective to coincide with the Latino culture’s centric family-focused structure is discussed.
